Episode 34: The One Where Ray gets Interviewed

This week, the tables are turned! In this episode, we switch it up and Jo Casey interviews me about everything that led up to me becoming a money coach and mentor, and everything that’s happened since.

We talk about how making 94 grand in the first year of my business wasn’t necessarily the relief it seemed it would be, and the unexpectedly scary and intimidating things that can come with reaching financial milestones, especially when they happen so quickly (yes, it’s possible for your diamond shoes to be too tight!)

I talk about trying to come back from a bad experience in my second year of business, and the different things that you can do to build yourself up after you’ve been knocked down.

We talk therapy, coaching, and how you can still be struggling and working through things while earning- the two aren’t exclusive!

There are things that you can consciously do to make that shift from having a business that requires your perfection (nope!), to having a business that works with you, your growth and ambitions (that’s more like it).

QUOTES

‘But a lot of my panic, a lot of my fear. A lot of the kind of emotional rollercoaster of like, of how I'd got to that 94k, was like: I can do this. I can do this. Oh my God. I don't think I can do this. I don't think I'm doing this. Or, oh my God. I need to hide in my bed and watch Grey's Anatomy because I’m terrified. Like that was kind of the three, like…the Bermuda triangle of emotion that I like swung around.’

‘I kept trying, I think it was like nine months to a year, I kept trying to fix myself and kept going for these quick fixes, like a short session with a hypnotherapist or a one-off session with a coach on something. And I just couldn't, it just wouldn't work.’

‘So even when we're in that high place where we’re like, ‘I'm feeling really excited, therefore none of the other stuff exists.’ I just squash it down and squash it down, squash it down, and then you can’t. You cannot squash stuff like that down. It's not how we work as humans. And so it just boils up and you're suddenly like, oh God, it's like utterly overwhelming.’

‘But there is that feeling of like, I've got wages to pay. I have always been the breadwinner in the family - I've got to support. If I don't make money. What do I do? And there's so much pressure, which is not the best thing when you're not feeling, you know, when you're feeling anxious or you've had your trauma poked at.’

‘It doesn't feel trustworthy. I think when I made that money fast. It felt very much like I'd been chucked up in the air and left. Then I was a bit like, what? Where am I? What's happening? I don't know. I didn't get here gently. It's why we should be much more positive about slow growth’
