Episode 35: Myth Busting Self Care

When it comes to talking about self-care, it’s easy to get lost in the buzzword that it’s become. That’s why I loved chatting with Mara Glatzel, who is an intuitive coach and writer.

During this episode, we demystify self-care, moving past the bubble baths and scented candles and one fits all solutions that oversimplify the term, and look at how you can actually reclaim space for your needs (nothing against bubble baths, of course).

We get into the nuance of the self-care discussion, like the dynamics of privilege within common ideas of self-care and the accessible ways that you can invest in ‘working on yourself instead of against yourself’, as Mara says, including everywhere from free resources to courses and coaching.

We also talk about the very concrete ways self-care can improve your business and moneymaking, even if it may seem like an intangible thing.

Mara breaks down the difference between ‘consistent self-care’ and ‘emergency self-care’, and why it’s important to build a relationship with yourself just like you would any other relationship in your life.

As you can see from the piles of quotes below, this is one you don’t want to miss!

ABOUT MARA

Mara is an intuitive coach, writer, and Needy podcast host. She describes herself as ‘a queer, femme wife and mother of two, recovering control freak, and a human who deeply understands the impulse to relegate her needs to the bottom of a very long to-do list in an attempt to prove her worth.’

Mara creates courses and circles that help you tend to your own self-care, ignite your courage, and connect you with a community grounded in the belief that each one of us is deserving of deep nourishment. Mara’s work does away with the one size fits all ‘self-care’ that continually misses the mark, and shows you how to rebuild the chasm in your relationship with yourself so that you can feel seen, heard, and adored, no matter what.

QUOTES

‘I started with five minutes, you know. I started taking care of myself as an extremely burnt-out person who really had no choice but figure out a different way.’

‘It's knowing yourself and caring for yourself in whatever way is doable for you. Really, it's about clearing out whatever is standing between you and knowing that you matter, and that you're allowed to have access to your own precious resources.’

‘I really like talking about money. Thinking about energy as a currency, especially for entrepreneurs. And you know, how we like… overdraw our bank accounts. The first time you overdraw, it's like a £30 fine, fine. But you continue to overdraft, continue to overdraw. It becomes this enormous financial emergency. And we do this with ourselves energetically, and it's really tricky because we can do it for a short period of time.’

‘You know, I think for a lot of entrepreneurs particularly, we get stuck in this cycle of… going all in to this hustle and grind for a launch or something like that. Doing way more than we possibly can. And then having to spend time recouping that energy that we expended only to do it again. And so, we get on that swinging pendulum of everything, to nothing, everything, to nothing and beyond.’

Part of it is really honouring your own needs as important in your business. It's not just having a certain model or having a certain amount of followers or having, you know, making a certain amount of money or whatever. It's like, my experience of this matters too.

‘The reality is that all of these quick fixes and 10 step plans and the things that we want, right- we want it to be easy. Or at least easier. They don't work, because what works is just being by your own side, mucking through it, being uncomfortable and not abandoning yourself.

‘We all feel that way: I'm a big problem. I need a big fix… but the reality is while we're looking for that big fix, we're not drinking enough.’
