Episode 73: Unapologetically Rambunctious with Mars Lord

I’m so excited to share my conversation with the brilliant Mars Lord with you today! Mars is a Certified Life Coach, birth activist, and a leading voice in Black Maternal Health and cultural competency. She is also the creator of Abuela Doulas, a doula preparation course primarily (but not exclusively) for Black and Brown bodied people.

Mars shares her experiences as a multi award-winning doula and mentor, and the responses she’s noticed from clients and businesses when educating on systemic and structural change. As someone who sits on the RCOG Race Equality Taskforce and on the Birthrights Legal inquiry into Black Maternal Health panel, Mars brings us invaluable perspective on the intersections between business, race, money making, and everything in between.

I hope you enjoy this conversation just as much as I did!

QUOTES

"Misogyny is a hatred and dislike of women. It doesn't have to mean calling women la, la, la, la, la, la, la to hate them. You can be in a relationship with a woman and still be misogynistic. Misogynoir quite simply is the intersection of between race and women. Yeah. So it's misogyny with a layer, a very thick layer, of black."

"Until we listen to black women, we cannot say we listen to all women."

"Your value is set. It's not the amount of money that you earn or don't earn. It's not the amount of work that you do or don't do. It's not what people say or don't say about you. It's not what you two or don't say about yourself. It is simply because of your intent of being a human being.”

"It's not about getting money from clients; it's about serving people. It's about true service. And true service (also) isn't being walked on like a mat.”
